Screening
A brief and simple assessment used to identify children who may be at risk for speech or language disorders. The goal of a screening is not to diagnose a specific condition but to determine whether further evaluation or therapy might be needed.
Evaluation
A comprehensive and in-depth assessment conducted by a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) to determine a child's specific speech, language, and communication needs. An evaluation is a detailed process that helps diagnose and guide the development of an individualized treatment plan.
Treatment
Therapeutic interventions provided by a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) to help children improve their communication skills. The treatment is personalized and designed to address the specific needs of the child, whether it’s related to speech production, language comprehension, social communication, or other related areas.
How it All Works

The screening usually involves fun, age-appropriate activities, such as talking, playing, or following simple instructions. If the screening indicates potential difficulties, the speech-language pathologist may recommend a more comprehensive assessment to explore further and determine whether therapy or other interventions are needed.

The evaluation process may consist of the following: hearing screenings, standardized tests to assess different areas of speech and language, informal assessment and/or observation, speech samples, parent information, or play-based assessment for younger children. After the evaluation, the SLP will compile all the information and provide a thorough report and recommendations for treatment.

Based on the assessment, the SLP creates a customized therapy plan. This plan is designed to target the child's unique needs and often involves goals to address communication challenges and techniques or strategies to be used in treatment.

Speech therapy often includes fun and engaging activities to teach concepts being targeted. Families also play an essential role in speech and language treatment. The SLP often provides strategies and activities that can be practiced at home to reinforce what the child is learning during therapy sessions. One key goal of speech and language treatment is to help the child apply the skills they learn in therapy to real-world situations. Throughout the treatment process, the SLP will work with the child to generalize skills in different settings, whether that’s at school, at home, or in social environments, and to become more independent in their communication!
